How to link a card to PayPal

Link to an existing PayPal account and understand separate purchase and transfer restrictions.

Before paying

Check that the service is available to your account and accepts your chosen card. Universal and Universal+ differ in fees and issuing country; the merchant may apply its own restrictions.

Check the card balance allowing for fees, conversion and verification charges. Use Card Details for the number, expiry and CVV, and SafePay Billing for the holder name and address. Keep the service profile information accurate.

Link the card

  1. Sign in to an existing PayPal account with accurate information. Check that the account and card meet its requirements.
  2. On the website, open Wallet → Link a debit or credit card. Enter the number, expiry, CVV and SafePay billing.
  3. Save the card and complete any offered PayPal verification. Check the final linking status.

If PayPal asks for a verification transaction or code

PayPal may perform a small verification authorization or charge when you link a card. Keep a small amount of available card balance, check your SafePay card activity and look for the verification request or descriptor in the actual transaction details. If the code is not visible or PayPal asks you to contact the issuer, send SafePay Support the request time and non-sensitive transaction reference. Do not disclose your CVV or login codes.

When making an eligible PayPal purchase, check that the intended SafePay card is selected as the funding source. Linking a card does not top up the PayPal balance, make card-to-card transfers available or override prohibited payment categories. If PayPal requires additional account verification, that is governed by PayPal and cannot be bypassed by SafePay.

After confirmation

PayPal may require its own account or card verification; SafePay cannot remove that restriction. Linking does not authorize money transfers or payment-wallet funding restricted by SafePay terms. Use only an eligible purchase-payment scenario.

If a 3D Secure request appears, complete the confirmation shown in SafePay, then return to the merchant. Do not pay again while the result is pending. For an error, keep its text, time and amount.
