Card checkout, Apple Pay, Google Pay, App Store and Google Play: what is the difference?

Which payment method to use at a merchant, where to set up the card and who bills you.

Updated

Pay by entering your card details

Use this method when the merchant shows a card-number form. In SafePay, open Show details → Card Details and copy the number, expiration date and CVV. Open Billing for your cardholder name and billing address. Enter the card details only on a trusted checkout page. Use accurate personal and service-account information, and keep enough funds on the card balance for the final amount, fees, conversion and possible temporary authorizations.

Before confirming, check the plan or product, the billing period, the currency and the final price. If the merchant requests 3D Secure, complete the prompt in SafePay and return to checkout. Do not retry a payment while its result is pending.

Pay using Apple Pay

Apple Pay is an option at the merchant’s checkout, not a subscription store. First add an eligible card to Apple Wallet. Universal+ supports Apple Pay; Universal does not. When the merchant actually displays an Apple Pay button, select Universal+ in the Apple Pay sheet, review the charge and authorize on your Apple device.

An Apple Pay button may be unavailable for a particular store, browser, device, region, purchase or subscription. Having your card in Wallet does not make Apple Pay available everywhere. If Apple Pay is missing, use another method that the merchant accepts.

Pay using Google Pay

Google Pay can be available at a merchant’s checkout after you add a supported SafePay card to Google Wallet. Both Universal and Universal+ are advertised as supporting Google Pay. When Google Pay is offered, choose the intended SafePay card in the payment sheet and confirm the amount.

Google Wallet eligibility, contactless support, merchant support and country restrictions are separate requirements. If a merchant does not offer Google Pay, having Google Wallet installed does not create that option.

Subscribe through the iPhone App Store

An in-app purchase uses the Apple Account payment methods set up under Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping, rather than the card saved in Apple Wallet. The purchase must be offered as an actual Apple in-app purchase in the official app. If the app redirects you to a website, the purchase is billed by the website instead.

App Store plans, prices and trial terms may differ from a web subscription. Before purchasing, check whether the same account already has an active website or store subscription. Future renewals and cancellation are managed through the channel that bills you.

Pay through Google Play

Google Play uses the Google Account’s Play payment methods and the related Google payments profile. Adding a card to Google Wallet for tap-to-pay does not necessarily add it to Google Play. In Google Play, open Profile → Payments & subscriptions → Payment methods and use an eligible method accepted for your account and country.

An eligible card or payment method does not override merchant, account-country, issuer or legal restrictions. Never change your personal details or pretend to live in another country merely to bypass a decline.

If the payment does not work

Check what payment method was used first. Then confirm the correct card, available card funds, accurate billing fields, any required 3D Secure approval, the merchant’s regional eligibility and whether there is already a pending authorization. Contact SafePay Support with the merchant name, method, amount, currency, date and time, error message and operation ID; do not send a full card number, CVV or verification code.
