Subscriptions: renewal and cancellation

Recurring charges, enough funds and cancellation with the merchant.

Prepare for renewal

Some services charge separately for usage, team seats or add-ons. A trial can also become a paid subscription automatically; monitor the merchant’s terms.

  1. Open the merchant subscription and check the next charge: date, amount, currency and card.
  2. Fund the card in advance, allowing for fees, conversion and possible additional authorization. Do not automatically treat available account balance as card funds.
  3. After a failed-charge notification, check the operation first. Update the method or retry through the service’s own payment action only after checking status.

How to stop renewal

  1. Cancel renewal in the merchant account. If purchased through the App Store or Google Play, use that store’s subscription settings.
  2. Keep the confirmation and access-end date. Check for outstanding invoices or a separate subscription on another account.

Freezing a SafePay card does not cancel the subscription contract or possible debt. Cancel with the merchant; refunds follow its rules.

Cancel in the same place that bills you

If a subscription was bought on the merchant’s website, manage it with that merchant. If it was purchased using Apple’s in-app purchase sheet, manage it in iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions. If it was purchased through Google Play, use Google Play → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Adding a new card to Wallet or updating the service’s website payment method does not necessarily change an existing store-billed subscription.

Before changing payment channels, check whether a subscription is already active; website and store purchases can have different prices and renewal dates. Avoid buying the same membership twice.
