Choose for your task

Consider Universal for its lower top-up fee and Google Pay. For Apple Pay, ChatGPT and Claude, consider Universal+. Card-type compatibility does not guarantee acceptance for every account: the merchant, bank and payment network may decline a payment.

Before issuance, check your intended service, current terms and regional restrictions. Currently, one card can be issued per account; do not assume an existing card can instantly change type.

Quick recommendations by payment scenario

Before paying for a card, compare its issuance fee, top-up fee, transaction fee, settlement currency, limits and expiry in the current SafePay app. Universal+ has SGD settlement with a USD-displayed balance, which can affect the final amount. Do not rely on a generic category such as “AI” to guarantee all AI services; merchant acceptance is specific.

  • ChatGPT or Claude directly on the web: choose Universal+. Universal is not supported for these services.
  • Apple Pay at a merchant’s checkout: choose Universal+; Universal is not supported for Apple Pay.
  • Google Pay: both card types are advertised as compatible, subject to Google Wallet’s device and country requirements.
  • Other online purchases, travel and subscriptions: check the service article and its eligibility rules before choosing either card. Not every merchant accepts every virtual card.
  • App Store or Google Play subscriptions: these use the account’s store payment method, not simply Apple Pay or Google Wallet. Check country, issuer and store eligibility separately.
